Decarbonization and the circular economy: driving the energy transition of a major player in the automotive industry

The automotive industry is undergoing an unprecedented transformation, driven by the energy transition and the need to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Faced with climate, regulatory and societal pressures, industry players are accelerating their transition to electric vehicles, while seeking new growth drivers. The mission is to support this transformation by promoting innovation and the adoption of decarbonization and circular economy solutions.

Decarbonize and enter the era of the circular economy to achieve carbon-neutral transport by 2050

The automotive and mobility sector is committed The automotive industry is undergoing rapid and unprecedented change, driven by a combination of factors: growing pressure to address climate and environmental issues, changing regulations and changing customer aspirations. Against this backdrop, the industry is adapting, with a strong acceleration towards electric vehicles for new vehicles. This transition is having a major impact on the upstream and downstream parts of the industry, which must find new sources of growth.

Mission objective: help the actors from the automotive and mobility industry to innovate and gradually shift à embrace the energy and environmental transition through the deployment and acceptance of decarbonization and circular economy solutions.

Apprehending decarbonization across an entire value chain with a circular economy approach is difficult for each player, independently. The challenge of the project is to cover the whole spectrum, identify best practices, initiate new synergies and support their implementation within our ecosystem.

Support in place

We have supported the first phase of the DIMo project (Decarbonizing the Mobility Industry), which consists of taking stock of the obstacles to be overcome and the actions to be launched to develop decarbonization and the circular economy within the automotive industry in the Seine Valley.

1.

More than 50 interviews with local stakeholders (institutional & industrial) to identify their obstacles and needs. Two benchmarks on the state of the ELV* sector and on circular economy platforms for the plastics sector.

2.
Co-construction of solutions with players across the value chain

Identification of 4 circular loops with major implications for the region: electronics, battery, powertrain, plastics

Group workshops with over 70 stakeholders to identify key actions to be implemented.

3.

Prioritization of actions identified in interviews and workshops and consolidation of a prioritized roadmap for phase 2 of the project.

Formalization of "action sheets" for priority projects

The results

Federation of 150 structures - major groups, SMEs, local authorities, startups and research centers - working towards common goals of sustainable decarbonization and reindustrialization.
Identification of 44 concrete actions on 4 priority circular economy loops for the region
Definition of a roadmap and onboarding of "driving" players to carry out POCs

And tomorrow?

Defining a roadmap for decarbonization and the circular economy is the first step in setting a course and federating the players in the various value chains. The challenge is then to "move to action" by implementing the first emblematic initiatives that will create a "snowball effect". The key to success lies in putting in place the conditions to guarantee the economic viability of these business models: massification of material flows, access to financing, cooperation between manufacturers and public authorities... Eurogroup Consulting's teams are fully mobilized to support the implementation of these virtuous ecosystems.
